The Gift

Day Four at Windermere. The last full day…for all intents
and purposes it’s over. Other than our gear and clothes we’re
wearing, we are packed for the return journey. While it feels like
we’ve been here a while, the week has flown by as it always does.

But for some of these kids, something eternally
significant has happened. And it’s not salvation.

Some of these kids received new names. And it will change their
lives in ways they may never realize.
Adam Clayton is an incredible drummer. At 22 he already plays with more vibe and musicality than players twice his age. Awesome is just one of the superlatives Adam deserves.

But more importantly, he is one of the coolest guys on the planet. Not only is he a beast musician, but he’s a great lover of people. The kids love him and if they don’t know any of our names, they know his.

And he knows theirs.

T-Dog. Lightning. Thunder. G-Force, Bridges, and Maybe.

Every day at lunch, Adam would find himself surrounded by kids. And being the fun
‘Krameresque’ guy that he is, he gave a lot of them nicknames.

Professor X. Blue Man and Light Blue Man. Stallion, Crazy McGee, and Swirls.

Why these names? Maybe a play on their name or something they were wearing. Who knows? But they loved it. Tonight at dinner, three more kids wanted in on the
action. “I want a cool nickname!” And the name was granted.

Peaches. Mac. Green Lantern. Doughboy and T-Rex and more
that we can’t remember.

I don’t know if Adam even understands the gift he gave. Whether knowingly or not, he spoke a name into their hearts. Kids are so tough…yet so fragile. Words and names can stick. I know full well both the positive and negatives of this. I have been on the receiving end of unwanted names…and ashamed that I have given this unwanted gift far many more times than I care to admit. To see someone transformed in one
moment from a guy with a normal name into ‘Stallion…’ That guy
walked away from the table with a little bit of swagger…

So many names given that we can’t even remember them
all. But the Father knows and remembers…

“To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden
manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written
on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.”
(Revelation 2:17 ESV)

  1. Thank you, George! Adam is my little boy. I’m so glad that he is making good impressions on young people and sharing his love of music as well. I’m not really good with words, but your post just captures the person of Adam. His dad and I are so glad that he gets to hang out with you and the rest of the “Band”. You have all made quite an impression on him! Again, thanks for the kind words and God bless you!

  2. I know also that Adam Clayton is the most wonderful young man. He is the coolest! Adam always makes you feel SPECIAL, no matter how old you are.
